Rhinoplasty is one of the most popular surgical procedures in facial plastic surgery. Some people are not happy with the shape of their nose and wish to have it changed. Injuries and trauma can distort the nose. The nasal appearance can also change with the aging process. Rhinoplasty can also be beneficial for patients who suffer from difficulty breathing through their nasal passages.
Benefits of Rhinoplasty
The aesthetic benefits of rhinoplasty are obvious. The nose is the central focus of the face. Improvement in the contour and form of the nose can help to frame the eyes and often improves the harmony of the upper, mid, and lower face. Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg approaches rhinoplasty with the philosophy that it requires meticulous attention to both artful form and sound structure. In addition to improving the appearance of the nose and restoring facial harmony, rhinoplasty can improve nasal breathing. When combined with a septoplasty, a deviated septum may also be corrected, resulting in improved nasal function.
How is a Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty procedures are individualized for each patient. Computer imaging is used to discuss and view the desired aesthetic goals with our patients. Rhinoplasty surgery is performed in our fully accredited surgery center under intravenous sedation, allowing us to offer the highest level of care in a safe, comfortable, and private setting. Incisions are most commonly made within the nose and sometimes on the small area of skin separating the nostrils. Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg then tailors the necessary changes to give the desired artful appearance with sound structural integrity.
Rhinoplasty takes approximately 2-4 hours, depending on the extent of surgery. A small splint will be placed on the nose for 5-6 days after surgery. No packing is placed inside the nose, however occasionally soft flexible silicone internal splints will be used.
Rhinoplasty Downtime and Recovery
In the immediate days after surgery, patients may experience bruising and minor swelling of the nose, and the area below the eyes. These side effects usually subside within 2 weeks. Patients usually have minimal downtime of 1-2 weeks before returning to work or school.
While immediate improvement is noted, the final results of rhinoplasty are usually seen in 1 year. Minor pain or discomfort after surgery is common and does tend to vary from patient to patient. Rest, gentle cold compresses, keeping the head elevated, and pain medication taken as needed are very helpful during the recovery period.
