Facial and neck aging is a complicated process involving changes to the skin, volume loss of the soft tissues of the face, relaxation of the fibrous/muscular tissues, descent of the soft tissues of the face, and volume loss in the facial bones. Sun exposure, genetics, stress, environmental factors, and weight loss can make these changes more apparent. The end result is the formation of rhtyids (wrinkles) and laxity (looseness) in the skin, loss of cheek volume, jowl formation, collection of adipose tissue (fat tissues) under the chin and neck, bands in the neck and loose neck skin.
Benefits of Face Lift
Face lift surgery is used to address the tissues of the lower face and neck. Depending on the type of face lift, the tissues of the midface, lower face, and neck are tightened to restore the youthful fullness to the cheeks, removed jowling, restore the youthful contour to the jawline, and tighten/smooth the contour of the neck.
How are Face Lift Surgeries Performed?
This surgery is performed in our fully accredited surgery center under intravenous sedation, allowing us to offer the highest level of care in a safe, comfortable, and private setting. A small incision (cut) is made just below the chin, with additional incisions made just in the sideburn, in front of the ear, around the earlobe, behind the ear and into the hairline. These incisions hide within the natural contours of the face and are barely visible after they have fully healed. Any excess adipose (fat) tissues are carefully removed and the muscle of the lower face and neck directly tightened and resuspended. In some cases, additional small incisions in the temple and inside the mouth are made in order to elevate the tissues of the midface using an Endotine midfacial implant. Finally, the skin of the face and neck is gently draped and any excess skin removed. The incisions are then closed . A gentle pressure dressing placed and removed the following day.
Face lift surgery is one of the safest plastic surgery operations performed and usually takes from three to four hours, depending on the extent of surgery. Advances in technique and technology have allowed for smaller incisions, a less invasive procedure, and shorter downtime.
Face Lift Recovery
This is an outpatient procedure, and once surgery is complete patients are sent home to the care of their significant other, family member, or trusted friend. A light compression dressing is placed at the end of the procedure and is worn for 24 hours. The compression dressing is removed the following day, and the operative areas are examined by Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg. We will demonstrate how to clean the incisions around the ears and under the chin. The sutures will remain in place for one week, while any staples in the hairline will remain for 10-12 days. Patients can expect swelling and bruising around the site of the surgery, which both resolve after the first one to two weeks. Temporary numbness of the earlobes and operative areas of the face and neck is common. This generally subsides over a period of a few weeks. Rest, cool compresses, and pain medication taken as needed are very helpful in the recovery period. Scar formation is minimal; Dr. Cynthia M. Gregg uses the most advanced techniques to hide all incisions and limit the size of the incisions. Makeup and skin care regimens can be resumed ten days after surgery. Patients usually have minimal downtime of 1-2 weeks before returning to work. We ask those patients traveling from out of town to stay for the first night following surgery.
